Almost every "how do I torrent privately" answer online says get a VPN. It is not wrong, but it is only one of two approaches — and for a lot of people it is the worse one. The distinction is simple once you see it:
- A VPN encrypts traffic between you and an exit server. Your machine still does the downloading and, crucially, the uploading.
- A seedbox is a remote server that does the transferring for you. Your home connection is never part of the swarm.
That difference cascades into everything else — speed, privacy, your electricity bill and whether your household can watch anything while you seed.
What the swarm actually sees
In BitTorrent, every peer sees every other peer's IP address. That is not a flaw; it is how peers find each other. Anti-piracy monitoring firms simply join swarms and log the addresses they see.
With a VPN, they log your VPN provider's exit IP. Your real address is hidden as long as the tunnel holds — and that "as long as" is the catch. If the VPN drops for ten seconds and your client keeps running without a working kill switch, your real IP is in the swarm. Plenty of people have found out the hard way.
With a seedbox, there is no tunnel to drop. The server is the peer. Your home connection only ever talks to your own server over an encrypted HTTPS or SFTP session — which looks exactly like any other web traffic to your ISP.
A VPN hides who is in the swarm. A seedbox means you were never in it.
Speed: the difference is not subtle
A VPN can only ever be as fast as your home line, minus encryption overhead and minus whatever congestion the exit server has. If you have a 100 Mbps connection, your ceiling is roughly 12 MB/s — and your upload is usually a fraction of that, which is what actually matters for seeding.
A seedbox sits in a datacentre on a 10 Gbps port. Transfers run at hundreds of megabytes per second, and it keeps uploading 24/7 whether your computer is on or not.

Cost, honestly
A decent VPN runs roughly €3–6/month. A seedbox starts around €7.99/month. So a VPN is cheaper — but it is worth comparing what you get rather than just the number.

When you still want a VPN
A seedbox covers torrenting. It does not cover the rest of your internet use. You still want a VPN if you want to:
- Encrypt all your device traffic — browsing, apps, phone, router
- Appear to be in another country for general browsing
- Protect yourself on public or untrusted Wi-Fi

So which should you pick?
- You mostly stream and browse, and torrent occasionally. A VPN alone is probably enough.

Common questions
Do I need a VPN if I have a seedbox?
Not for torrenting — the seedbox already keeps your home connection out of the swarm. You would only add a VPN to cover your other devices and everyday browsing, and that is included on every plan.
Can my ISP see what I download to a seedbox?
No. The only traffic between you and the box is an encrypted HTTPS or SFTP session, which is indistinguishable from ordinary secure web traffic.
Is a seedbox legal?
Yes. Renting a server is entirely legal; what you choose to transfer with it is your responsibility. Our servers are in the Netherlands and we keep no activity logs.
